XRP is the asset of the XRP Ledger, a network built specifically for fast, cheap settlement rather than general-purpose computation. Transactions confirm in a few seconds and cost a fraction of a cent, with the fee destroyed rather than paid to anyone.
Consensus without mining
The XRP Ledger does not use mining or staking. Servers each maintain a list of other servers they consider trustworthy, and agreement emerges when these lists overlap sufficiently. This is why it is fast and energy-light. It also means security rests on the assumption that the validator lists in use are diverse enough — a different set of trade-offs from proof of work, not an absence of them.
Supply works differently
Unlike networks that issue new units over time, all XRP was created at inception. A large portion has been held by Ripple, the company most associated with the asset, and released on a schedule through escrow. Anyone assessing XRP has to account for that overhang, because scheduled supply entering the market is a structural feature rather than a rumour.
The legal history is central
XRP was the subject of prolonged securities litigation in the United States, and the outcome shaped how the asset is treated by exchanges and what can be said about it. This is unusually important context: for a period, major venues delisted it entirely, and access depended heavily on jurisdiction. Regulatory classification of crypto assets remains unsettled in many countries and can change what you are able to do with a holding.
What it is used for
The pitch has consistently been cross-border settlement — moving value between currencies without pre-funding accounts in each destination. How much real institutional settlement volume flows through it, as opposed to speculative trading, is genuinely difficult to establish from public data, and we would rather say that than quote a figure we cannot source.
How to read the figures above
Price and market statistics come from a public market API with a visible timestamp. The chart uses daily closes from a verified trading pair and will not reproduce intraday highs or lows.
