About

Dogecoin began in 2013 as a joke — a fork of an existing codebase with a meme attached. It has since sustained a market value that places it among the larger crypto assets, which makes it a genuinely useful case study in how much of this market is driven by attention rather than utility.

Supply is unlimited, by design

This is the most important technical fact about Dogecoin and the one most often missed. There is no supply cap. A fixed number of new coins is issued with every block, indefinitely. The inflation rate falls over time because that fixed issuance is divided by an ever-larger supply, but the absolute number of new coins entering circulation each year does not decrease. Any comparison with a capped-supply asset that skips this is misleading.

Merged mining

Dogecoin is secured by miners who mine it simultaneously with another proof-of-work chain, at effectively no additional cost. This gives it far more security than its own fee revenue could support alone, but it also means its security is a by-product of another network’s economics rather than something it sustains independently.

What it is used for

Transactions are fast and cheap, and it functions perfectly well for small transfers and tipping — the purpose it was built for. Development activity has historically been modest, and the protocol has changed little.

Where the risk sits

Dogecoin’s price has repeatedly moved sharply on social media activity and individual public statements rather than on anything about the network. An asset whose value is driven primarily by attention can lose it just as quickly, and drawdowns have been severe and prolonged. This is a materially different risk profile from an asset with cash flows, usage-linked demand or a capped supply, and it should be assessed as such rather than by analogy to any of them.

How to read the figures above

Price and market statistics come from a public market API and are timestamped. Because supply grows continuously, market capitalisation here reflects the circulating supply at the time of reading. The chart uses daily closes and omits intraday extremes.

Nothing on this page is financial advice or a recommendation to buy, sell or hold Dogecoin (DOGE) Price, Chart & Analysis. Crypto assets are volatile and you can lose the entire amount you put in. Figures are sourced and timestamped above; always verify against the venue you intend to use.
