What is an affiliate disclosure?

A statement identifying the commercial relationship between a publisher and the products it writes about.

An affiliate disclosure tells a reader that the publisher may be paid when they act on a link, and ideally states the nature of that arrangement.

Why it matters

Most disclosures are written to satisfy a regulator rather than to inform a reader: a generic sentence in the footer, applying to the whole site, naming no partner and no page. That is compliance, not transparency. A disclosure is only useful if it is specific about this page and this relationship, positioned where the reader will see it before acting rather than after, and honest about whether the commercial arrangement influenced the ordering. That standard is the entire premise of this publication, and it is deliberately easy to check us against.
