About

Solana is a blockchain built for speed. Where most networks accept low throughput in exchange for very modest hardware requirements, Solana takes the opposite position: validators run powerful machines, and the network targets very high transaction rates with sub-second confirmation and fees measured in fractions of a cent.

How the speed is achieved

Transactions are ordered using a verifiable clock, which lets validators agree on sequence without the back-and-forth messaging that slows other designs. Combined with parallel execution — independent transactions processed simultaneously rather than one after another — this produces throughput far beyond what a conventional single-threaded chain manages.

The trade-off, stated plainly

Demanding hardware means fewer people can afford to run a validator, and that concentrates the set of participants securing the network. Whether this matters is a genuine disagreement rather than a settled question: one view holds that decentralisation is measured by whether anyone can verify the chain, another that it depends on how many independent parties actually produce blocks.

The outage history is part of the record

Solana has suffered multiple network halts, where block production stopped and validators coordinated a restart. Causes have included transaction floods during high-demand events and consensus bugs. The network has been substantially reworked since, with fee mechanisms designed to price out spam, and the frequency of incidents has fallen. We include this because a comparison that omits documented downtime is not a comparison — and because “it has not happened recently” is a weaker claim than it sounds.

What it is used for

Cheap, fast transactions suit high-frequency trading, consumer payments and applications that would be unusable at higher fees. Much of its activity sits in trading venues and token issuance, which means on-chain volume is sensitive to speculative cycles.

How to read the figures above

Price and market data come from a public API and are timestamped. The chart is built from daily closing candles on a verified trading pair, so it reflects that venue rather than a blended global price, and it will not show intraday extremes.

Nothing on this page is financial advice or a recommendation to buy, sell or hold Solana (SOL) Price, Chart & Analysis. Crypto assets are volatile and you can lose the entire amount you put in. Figures are sourced and timestamped above; always verify against the venue you intend to use.
