About

Stellar is a settlement network built for moving value between currencies quickly and cheaply. Transactions confirm in seconds for a fraction of a cent, and the fee is destroyed rather than paid to anyone.

Anchors and the built-in exchange

Stellar’s distinguishing feature is that issuing assets is a first-class function rather than something bolted on. An institution — an “anchor” — issues a token representing a claim on a real currency it holds, and that token moves across the network like any other asset.

The ledger also includes an order book natively, so a payment can be sent in one currency and received in another, with the network finding a path through available offers automatically. XLM often serves as the intermediate hop when no direct market exists between two currencies. That is the actual product: not a store of value, but a settlement rail with currency conversion built into the protocol.

Consensus without mining or staking

Stellar uses neither proof of work nor proof of stake. Each server chooses which other servers it trusts, and agreement emerges where those choices overlap sufficiently. This is why it is fast and consumes very little energy.

It also relocates the security assumption rather than removing it. Safety depends on the trust configurations in use being genuinely diverse, and in practice many operators adopt similar defaults — which invites a reasonable question about how independent the validating set really is. Supporters regard this as an acceptable trade for speed and cost; critics regard it as a different kind of centralisation wearing decentralised clothing. Both readings are defensible.

Supply and governance

All XLM was created at inception rather than issued over time, and a substantial portion has been held by the foundation associated with the network, which funds development and adoption. Anyone assessing the asset has to account for that concentration, because it is a structural feature rather than a rumour. A large quantity was destroyed in a single decision some years ago, which is itself a demonstration that supply here is subject to governance rather than fixed by protocol.

Where the risk sits

Anchor risk is specific and often overlooked: holding an issued token means trusting the issuer to honour redemption, which is a credit relationship the protocol cannot enforce. Beyond that, the usual applies — volatility, custody, and a competitive field where several networks target the same cross-border settlement use case.

How to read the figures above

Market statistics come from a public API and are timestamped. The chart is drawn from daily closes on a verified pair and omits intraday highs and lows.

Nothing on this page is financial advice or a recommendation to buy, sell or hold Stellar (XLM) Price, Chart & Analysis. Crypto assets are volatile and you can lose the entire amount you put in. Figures are sourced and timestamped above; always verify against the venue you intend to use.
