What is a non-custodial wallet?

A wallet where you alone hold the private keys, giving you direct control and sole responsibility.

A non-custodial wallet generates and stores keys under your control. No company can move your funds, and no company can restore them.

Why it matters

It removes counterparty risk and replaces it with operational risk, which people consistently underestimate. Lose the recovery phrase and the funds are gone permanently — there is no support line and no reset. Send to a wrong address and the transfer is irreversible. Sign a malicious approval and a contract can drain the wallet later. The security model also shifts entirely onto you: the phrase must survive fire, theft and your own forgetfulness, which is why a written backup in more than one physical location beats any digital copy. Nobody legitimate will ever ask for that phrase.
