Avalanche is a platform for running many blockchains rather than a single chain. That architectural choice is what distinguishes it and what most of its trade-offs follow from.
Three chains, three jobs
The core platform separates functions that most networks combine. One chain handles asset creation and transfers, another runs smart contracts and is compatible with Ethereum tooling, and a third coordinates validators and the network’s own governance.
Separating them means each can be optimised for its task — simple transfers are not competing for space with complex contract execution — at the cost of a system that is more complicated to understand and to build across.
Consensus by repeated sampling
Rather than every validator communicating with every other, a validator repeatedly asks small random samples of other validators what they think, and adjusts toward the majority. Repeated enough times, the network converges quickly with high confidence.
The practical result is fast finality — transactions are settled rather than probabilistically confirmed within seconds — without the heavy messaging overhead of older designs. Finality that is definite rather than statistical is genuinely useful, because it removes the question of how many confirmations are enough.
Subnets
The more consequential feature is that anyone can launch their own network with its own rules, validator set and fee token, while drawing on the platform’s infrastructure. This suits applications that need a dedicated environment — an institution requiring that validators meet specific criteria, or a game that cannot tolerate competing for block space.
The trade-off is that a subnet is only as secure as the validators it recruits. A network with few validators is not protected by the main platform’s security simply by association, and assessing anything running on a subnet means assessing that subnet rather than the platform.
Where the risk sits
Validators must stake a substantial minimum, which raises the bar for participation compared with networks allowing small delegations. AVAX is used for fees and staking and is burned as fees are paid, so demand is linked to activity — but the subnet model deliberately allows activity to occur with other fee tokens, which complicates that relationship.
Competition among fast contract platforms is intense, and much of what distinguishes them is developer adoption rather than a durable technical moat.
